IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa is ready to demolish a nearly 100-year-old building that was originally built by the state as a place to isolate tuberculosis patients.
Officials say Oakdale Hall on the UI Research Park campus will be hit with a wrecking ball Friday morning, weather permitting. The total demolition will take two to three weeks.
The state built Oakdale Hall as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients in 1917. The university took over the property in 1965 and has used it for a variety of programs.
The building housed the State Hygienic Laboratory until December. University officials say they can save millions in maintenance and energy costs by tearing it down and relocating occupants elsewhere.
